An early step in every job search is an encounter with a recruiter, whether it’s a headhunter from an executive search firm or a company’s internal talent acquisition specialist. Regardless, it’s critical that you understand how a recruiter thinks, the process they use to find candidates and how companies narrow down the field to 3-5 qualified individuals.

During this meeting, veteran executive recruiter, Chris Nadherny, will help you understand the process that a recruiter goes through to find the most viable candidates. You’ll gain an insider’s perspective followed by a Q&A session where meeting attendees will have a chance to ask Chris questions that they typically aren’t comfortable asking an individual in his role Some of the topics that Chris’ presentation will cover include:

* The upfront discussions that take place between hiring manager and recruiter.
* The research and tools that go into finding qualified candidates & how you can make yourself more visible.

Chris Nadherny is a former executive search consultant, practice leader and partner with Spencer Stuart’s Chicago office for 30 years. He has conducted over 700 searches for many Fortune 1000 firms including PepsiCo and Johnson & Johnson. He led the Spencer Stuart’s Global Digital Practice and his searches covered a broad range of industries such as: consumer goods, service firms, retailers, hospitality, heathcare, marketing service companies, B2B enterprises and private equity. Chris is also getting ready to publish a career guidebook with his insights from his many interactions with executives. Chris is an MBA graduate from the Wharton School of Business and sits on the Advisory Board of GVG Capital, a private equity firm focused on digital/e-commerce.

Have you ever been frustrated when a recruiter doesn’t call you back? The following information will help you set realistic expectations and hopefully obtain better results.
It’s important that you understand the following realities about Staffing and Recruiting Firms:

1. Most specialize in a specific industry, profession or geographic location.

ACTION ITEM: You must identify if the recruiters you are using specialize in the type of job you are seeking.

2. When companies hire recruiting firms to provide them with talent, they are very specific about the education, skills, experience and job stability they require. This greatly limits who recruiting firms can present to their various clients.
ACTION ITEM: Review your resume or CV. If you do not have the education, skills, experience or job stability required, you may have more success by either changing your job target or applying directly to companies.
3. Staffing and Recruiting Firms also specialize in different segments of the job market. Some place only full-time positions, some specialize in temporary jobs and others focus on higher level long term contracts. There are also firms who consider themselves blended who place in more than one segment of the profession.

ACTION ITEM: Work with recruiters who specialize in the type of job you are seeking. If you want to work as a contractor, identify contract staffing firms in your niche or area of interest.

4. Recruiters don’t have time to provide daily or weekly updates. They spend most of their time reaching out to their clients trying to market your abilities, to schedule interviews for you. They often represent 200+ candidates and if they constantly reached out to them, they would have no time to find you a job.

ACTION ITEM:
Contact your recruiter if you change information on your resume or schedule interviews on your own. This helps your recruiter fine tune their search efforts on your behalf and not duplicate any of your efforts.

Recruiters only earn commissions if they place their candidate in a job – so they have a vested interest to place you. However, if you are not in their area of specialization, want to work in a segment they don’t represent and lack experience or job stability, often their hands are tied.

Take time to RESEARCH the Staffing and Recruiting Firm Recruiter who places in your area of expertise, and you will greatly enhance your chance of success.

Tips for LinkedIn Changes in 2017
Thank Michelle Robin for LinkedIn tip this week. LinkedIn has been rolling out its new UI over the last week or so. Michelle suggests that current users backup their personal profiles.

Here is Michelle’s tip:
“One of the things I always recommend people do when connecting to others on LinkedIn is offer to make introductions for their new connection. It helps get your connection request accepted because you’re offering something of value. With the new user interface rolling out as we speak, it may be a little bit tougher for users to search their 1st-degree connections as LinkedIn is removing the advanced search part of that feature. You’ll have to scroll through everyone instead.
By the way, here is my gift to you. Request a download of your data from LinkedIn before the new UI hits your profile and backup your profile by downloading a PDF of it. To request an archive of your data: Rollover your headshot in the top right of the menu bar –> Click Privacy and Settings –> Click “Getting an archive of your data –> Select Fast and full data archive. You’ll receive the files within 24 hrs.

To download a PDF of your profile, go to your profile –> Click the arrow next to the “View profile as” button –> Select “Save to PDF.”

That’s it.

This meeting will provide perspectives from both the executive recruiter and the hiring company. If you don’t understand how they think and what they look for in top candidates, the process of elimination can be extremely frustrating. During the presentation portion of our meeting, Lynn Hazan, a Chicago executive recruiter for 32 years, will share her perspectives that help executives address key questions such as:
  • How do I create demand for my talent?
  • How can I compete against a younger workforce?
  • Why am I being overlooked?
  • How do I get on a recruiter’s radar screen?
More specifically, during this session, Lynn will lead a very interactive presentation that will talk about the new talent recruiting environment.
