04-11-2017: Slow down, Check your work, then Smell the Flowers

– Tips for Successful Placement

Dear Readers: In this “always on” deadline-oriented business that we call work today, we often work at a pace that is too fast to sustain. The consequences can have a negative effect. You don’t want your resume/writing samples to be rejected because of errors. The ability to proofread your own work is one of the standards  that we seek in “A” candidates, no matter what your level.
Help yourself. Try these 10 Proofreading tips BEFORE you press the send button.
  1. Write or type your document.
  2. Walk away from it. Give your eyes a rest from the computer screen.
  3. Come back and proofread your work. Option: You may want to print your document and then proof it, pen/cursor in hand, word by word.
  4. Proof by starting at the bottom of the document. By starting this way, you force your brain to look at content differently.
  5. Know the difference between right and wrong spelling: Bachelors degree is wrong. It should read Bachelor’s Degree, Bachelor of Arts or B.A. This mistake comes up repeatedly.
  6. Your computer doesn’t know the difference between he and her, roll or role. Only your brain can help you.
  7. If you are working on a writing test, only you should be writing and proofing your work.
  8. If you sent a document and saw that you accidentally made some mistakes, re-send your corrected version and apologize. We recognize that we all make mistakes.  Learning from our errors will make us more aware of potential issues.
  9. Create a cheat sheet of words that you might spell incorrectly with the proper spelling.  This would be especially useful for scientific, technical or medical terms.
  10. Remember spelling bees? Practice spelling out loud. When it comes time to transcribe, spell out your problem words out loud as you type.

Radio talk show host speaks on “How to deliver a dynamic introduction that creates interest & makes you memorable” plus a round of networking.

We all need to be able to deliver a quick introduction of ourselves that lets people know who we are and what we we have to offer a prospective employer. But, in fact, one of the most difficult questions that job seekers struggle with is “What do you do?” Unfortunately, many people respond in a way that leaves the listener unexcited or unclear. And that short 60-second pitch may be the one key moment you get to create interest and an opportunity to become memorable.

During this meeting, renown radio talk show host, Catherine Johns, will discuss about how to create and deliver a powerful and concise elevator speech. You will learn how to create excitement and credibility so people will want to know you better, will want to refer you and will want to hire you. During this evening, Catherine will discuss the following topics:

A new way of thinking about the “old” elevator speech
Three things your introduction must include to capture interest
Tips for structuring your introduction to make it more intriguing
How to use language that draws people in
Words to avoid because they go in one ear and other the other
The secret to having more confidence when you talk about your work experience

Catherine Johns is extremely accomplished radio news anchor who worked several years at WLS radio alongside Larry Lujack, John “Records” Landecker and Fred Winston. Come to the meeting and see her in action for yourself… and learn how you can improve your elevator pitch.
